Hurrah, we come to the end of the module! We started the module wondering how India's cotton production increased a lot between 2003 and 2013. The reason for this increase is a genetically modified seed called Bt cotton.
Bt cotton seeds protected the cotton plants from some pests, which meant that the cotton farmer got a much higher yield. Many farmers planted cotton with Bt cotton seeds, and India's total production of cotton grew very quickly.
Bt cotton ran into many other controversies later. Some scientists question whether we should be using Bt cotton seeds. Like with many other genetically modified seeds, the situation will only become more clear with time.
