Hurrah, we come to the end of the module! We mentioned in the beginning that we will discuss a method to detect tiny, weakly-interacting particles. The technique is called the Missing Energy method.
Scientists start with some amount of energy in a system. They then create particles from this system. Some of these particles may be the unknown particles the scientists are trying to discover.
The scientists then calculate the total energy of all the known particles. If the total energy of the known particles is less than the system's energy that the scientists began with, some energy has gone missing.
Scientists can then see if this missing energy is contained in the unknown particles. This is how a simple concept like the Conservation of Energy is useful in the most advanced scientific experiments even today!
