Hurrah, we come to the end of the module! Let's see why our mouths produce saliva. We discussed that mitochondria in cells produce ATP. But, how does the food we eat reach the mitochondria?

This process is complex and very interesting. But, the first step happens in the mouth itself. Even if you just think of food, your brain tells your mouth that maybe some food will be eaten soon.

Your mouth then starts to produce saliva that has enzymes. These enzymes help break the food down into smaller molecules.
