Brilliant! The Earth always exerts a force on every object. The force is given by the formula \(W = m g\). This doesn't change. Never.
So, in this case, we see that even though the Earth is exerting a force on the object, the Net Force is \(0\). In other words, there is another force being exerted on the object in the opposite direction that cancels Earth's force.

This force is called the Normal Force. The normal force is a force a surface exerts on an object resting on it. The surface exerts just enough force to cancel the force being exerted downwards.

In geometry, normal means perpendicular. This force is called the normal force because it acts perpendicular to the surface.
